Exploring balanced harvest as a potential strategy for highly exploited multispecies fisheries

چکیده
Abstract Balanced harvest (BH) proposes moderate fishing mortality rates across all species or sizes in proportion to productivity, serving as a possible strategy for ecosystem-based fisheries management. Fishing patterns some developing countries (e.g. China, the largest producer of seafood) closely resemble BH, where catches have been highly diversified by unselective gears due market demand almost species. In this study, we employed an OSMOSE ecosystem model developed Yellow Sea China investigate potential occurrences and advantages BH region with exploited multispecies fisheries. Simulations were carried out under four types scenarios, various levels specific functional groups implemented. Results indicated that depended on pressure targeted groups, size-level was significantly correlated biomass yield most particular, varying certain resulted which produced high ensured their sustainability. We concluded benefits could be potentially achieved adjusting based existing pattern over-exploited ecosystems.

Fisheries-induced neutral and adaptive evolution in exploited fish populations and consequences for their adaptive potential
Fishing may induce neutral and adaptive evolution affecting life-history traits, and molecular evidence has shown that neutral genetic diversity has declined in some exploited populations. Here, we theoretically study the interplay between neutral and adaptive evolution caused by fishing. An individual-based eco-genetic model is devised that includes neutral and functional loci in a realistic e...

Goal To analyze the possibility for recreational fishing to induce genetic changes in exploited fish populations, and thereby to increase awareness of such potential among stakeholders and stimulate increased research effort and long-term monitoring of fish populations exploited by angling fisheries. As a result of selective (i.e. non-random) mortality, exploitation of wild living resources can...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of Harvest Control Rules for Data-Poor Fisheries
For federally managed fisheries in the USA, National Standard 1 requires that an acceptable biological catch be set for all fisheries and that this catch avoid overfishing. Achieving this goal for data-poor stocks, for which stock assessments are not possible, is particularly challenging. A number of harvest control rules have very recently been developed to set sustainable catches in data-poor...
متن کاملHarvest Strategies for an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management in Western Mediterranean Demersal Fisheries
The serious overfishing of most Mediterranean stocks demands urgent reforms of the management measures aiming to guarantee the sustainability of resources, notably when compared with the improvement observed in other European areas. The new EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) constitutes an excellent opportunity to introduce the changes needed for such a reform. According to this CFP, all European...
